Pupil Premium at Collingwood Primary School

Our Principles

  • We enhance the teaching and learning experience for all of our children.
  • We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of our pupils.
  • We provide appropriate support and advice to families from Learning Mentors and direct them to LA personnel such as Family Entrepreneurs
  • We recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils we have legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.

Our Governors ensure value for money in all aspects of the school budgeting and therefore the use of pupil premium is carefully targeted to ensure the best outcomes from the resources we provide.

The funding for the financial year 2015-16 was £1300 per eligible pupil. This equated to a sum of £251,680 over the financial year.

This is how we spent the money (2015-2016) which enabled us to meet the needs of this pupil group: 

Well Being

Providing nurture groups and 1:1 support for emotional difficulties; difficulty in making friends etc 

Providing a free breakfast club.

Providing support and advice to families from Learning Mentors and directing them to LA personnel such as Family Entrepreneurs, especially regarding attendance and lateness issues, but also a range of other issues such as bereavement.

Improving attendance and support from home with target hard-to-reach families.

English

1:1 support for individuals (lower or higher ability) in receipt of FSM who appear to be at risk of not making satisfactory progress in English. Some of this support has been delivered by TA staff using designated programmes such as Write Away Together, Catch up Reading, Read Write Inc 1:1 support, or teacher led 1:1 support.

Running English booster classes for targeted children in year 6.

Funding the Write Away Together Programme.

*    Providing additional teaching assistant support to provide RWI 1:1 interventions and small group RWI lesson

      Reduced class sizes in year 2 and year 6 by providing extra teacher support.

 Maths

*     Reduced class sizes in year 2 and year 6 by providing extra teacher support.

*     Running maths booster classes for targeted children in year 6 by staff.

*     1:1 support for individuals (lower or higher ability) in receipt of FSM who appear to be at risk of not making satisfactory progress in maths. Designated Numbers Count 1 programme delivered by experiences teacher.

*     Maths booster classes for targeted higher ability children in maths in year 6 by a Maths specialist.

   Engagement

*      Providing free instrumental music tuition in flute, clarinet and drums.

*      Providing enrichment activities such as story tellers, visiting drama specialists and theatre companies, visiting IT specialists, visits out (e.g. to Hancock,    Segedunum), and subsidising these.

*      Providing extra challenge for more able pupils in receipt of PP in computing, poetry, chess, etc.

*      Providing extra equipment to support the teaching of FSM pupils where necessary.

*      Providing ICT equipment to ensure no child misses out on computer related opportunities.

*      Funding Science Summer camps to The Dove Laboratory at Cullercoats over the summer holidays.

*      Our talented artists worked with professional artists for the day at The Baltic.

*      Year 6 more able pupils took part in a coding competition with our specialist.

  • Year 4 and 5 pupils took part in the 'Go Wild' outdoor after school club.

*      Providing children from Nursery to Year 6 with the opportunity to work with established artist Chris Howlett.

Our disadvantaged pupils outperformed all non-pp pupils nationally in writing and were only 2% behind non-pp pupils nationally in maths.

Our disadvantaged pupils outperformed their national peers in writing, maths, grammar punctuation and spelling, and overall for RWM.


Pupil Premium Grant Allocation for 2016/17 is: £249,360.

This is how we plan to spend the Pupil Premium allocation for 2016-2017 to meet the needs of this pupil group:

  • An experienced teacher to be trained as our Reading Recovery teacher, to deliver targeted reading support to identified children

*      Two of our Learning Mentors are trained Solihull facilitators. Solihull Parenting course to be delivered in school this academic year.

*      Reduced class sizes in year 6 by providing extra teacher support.

 Numbers Count 2 Maths intervention programmes delivered by experienced teacher.

  Continuing to provide free instrumental music tuition in flute, clarinet and drums

  Continue to provide enrichment activities such as story tellers, visiting drama specialists and theatre companies, visiting IT specialists, visits out (e.g. to The Rising    Sun, Hancock, Segedunum, Kirkley Hall), and subsidising these.

*     To continue to offer all children the opportunity to work with established artist Chris Howlett. 



Recognition of exceptional work of pupil premium children

In January 2015, we won £1,000 for the exceptional performance of our pupil premium children in May 2014. We used our reward for enrichment activities for pupils, including a free theatre visit, a magic show, an inflatable assault course and a whole school picnic. Our Headteacher was invited to be a pupil premium reviewer in 2015.
